South African Yurav Premlal was one shot away from breaking Tiger Woods’ 26-year-old record for the biggest margin of victory on the DP World Tour when he won the Catalunya Championship.
Premlal finished with a 28-under 63 in the final round and secured his maiden DP World Tour victory by 14 shots from compatriot Sean Norris.
The American great Woods finished 15 shots off the field when he won the US Open in 2000.
Premlal repeated his 63 in the third round a day later, again carding 10 birdies and a bogey.
On top of prize money of just over 400,000 euros (£345,000), the 22-year-old took home a course record $50,000 (£36,700) for 63 and also climbed from 598th to 250th in the world rankings.
“No talk,” said Premlal, who climbed from 157th to 26th in the Race to Dubai rankings.
“I’ve worked very hard to get to this position and it’s very rewarding to finally see it pay off.
“I mean the last eight, nine months have been such a struggle to build myself up to a platform where I know I can give myself a chance to win and obviously finish in this position.
“I’m so grateful it’s a dream come true.”
