Yebrgual Melise: Ethiopian marathon runner dies at age

Ethiopian long-distance runner Yebrgual Melise died on Tuesday at the age of 36 after falling ill during a routine training session, the country’s athletics federation announced.

Melisse, winner of marathons in Houston, Prague and Shanghai, was preparing for a May 24 race in Ottawa.

According to local media reports, he suddenly experienced a medical emergency in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.

He was rushed to the hospital but died despite the efforts of the medical staff.

No further details have been released.

“The Ethiopian Athletics Federation expresses deep sorrow at the sudden death of this heroic athlete and extends its condolences to his family, friends and fans,” the governing body said in a statement.

Mélis’ most recent competitive outing came in a marathon in Beijing, which he failed to finish, in May last year.

His best result in one of the seven world marathon majors came in 2015 – the same year as his victories in Houston and Prague – when he finished second in the Chicago Marathon.
