Xbox warns of ‘reset’ when it’s ready to be removed

Microsoft’s Xbox division will be hit with a major layoff next month, according to people familiar with Microsoft’s plans.

The company has been planning layoffs for weeks, with Xbox CEO Asha Sharma referring to “difficult decision-making” last month. Sources indicate that the cuts could include studio closures, or changes to the list of Xbox studios. Minutes before BloombergXbox CEO Asha Sharma and chief product officer Matt Booty report sent a memo to Xbox staff“Xbox reset” warning in the next 100 days. Sharma and Booty highlighted the challenges facing the business. “With the exception of Activision Blizzard King, over the past five years, we have spent more than $20 billion on ongoing investment, platform, and hardware support, but our annual revenue has fallen by nearly half a billion over that time,” he wrote. “Going forward, this cannot continue.”

He added that “we are in a hardware crisis,” noting that prices for the 2027 holiday season are expected to be more than 5x the prices we were paying two years ago. He added that “we are looking for a new way of doing business with hardware partnerships as we commit to Helix.”

Sharma and Xbox head of strategy Matthew Ball have been saying that “very different” comforts businesses this week, and the mention of “hardware partnerships” helps some PC OEMs to build Xbox consoles based on new AMD chips in the future.

But right now, “Xbox’s current development is not built for the coming battle,” Sharma and Booty wrote, saying “we will change and rebuild our infrastructure and focus on our XBOX capabilities and M&A capabilities to help us win in hardware, PC, mobile, and computing.”

Sharma has already made some big decisions since taking over, including production Weapons: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution Xbox console only.
