Cassandre Beaugrand and Matt Hauser both claimed third wins at this year’s World Triathlon Championship series in London, where British hopes were hampered by crashes on the bikes.
Tilly Anema was unable to continue after hitting a cone while part of a lead duo, while fellow Briton Alex E was a minute down in the 13-man lead group when he crashed shortly before the second transition.
Olympic champion Ye set the fastest time for the run – his strongest discipline – but gained just 17 seconds over Hauser and Vasco Villaca, who produced a thrilling sprint finish in the men’s race.
World champion Hauser won in 50 minutes 28 seconds, three seconds behind the Australians from Portugal’s Villaca over a course of 750m swim, 20km bike ride and 5km run.
Hungary’s Songor Lehmann was third – eight seconds behind Hauser – while Ye was more than a minute back in 14th and compatriot Max Stapley 12th.
Olympic champion Beaugrand won the women’s race in 56 minutes 6 seconds, five seconds ahead of Germany’s Lisa Tersch, 15 seconds ahead of Sweden’s Tilda Manson.
Beth Potter and Georgia Taylor-Brown were the best Brits in fourth and sixth respectively as London hosted the WTCS for the first time since 2015.
Beaugrand was 27th out of the water but held off a late challenge from world champion Tersch to stay safely in the chase group on the bike before hitting the front in the race.
“I had one of my worst swims,” Beaugrand said. “I had to get on the bike and try to save some energy for the run.”
With two more races before the grand final, Potter still leads the women’s rankings – Beaugrand sixth – while Villaca is third with men’s leader Hauser.
Both Vilaca and Hauser were in the lead group, before Hauser pulled clear around the final two corners.
“It was nice to have another battle with Vasco and see what we have left at the end,” Houser said.
