Gary Anderson produced a near-flawless display to beat Ryan Joyce to reach the last-16 of the World Matchplay in Blackpool.
Scotland’s Anderson, the 2018 champion, delivered superb finishes of 144 and 141 as he cruised to a 10-2 win at the Winter Garden.
Former world champion Anderson, who averages 109.96 and the Englishman has won the last five legs with Joyce, has no answer.
“The trebles were going in, the doubles were going in, the checkouts were going in — that’s when you can’t go wrong,” Anderson said.
“Ryan came up against it. You get those days when you close your eyes and throw everything and this was one of those days.”
Anderson, who is seeded 12th, will set up a second-round match against Welsh fifth seed Jonny Clayton after beating Australia’s Damon Hetta 10-7.
Clayton opened his winning streak with a brilliant 144 finish before describing last-16 opponent Anderson as his “hero”.
Elsewhere, three-time champion Michael van Gerwen defeated Andrew Gilding 10-6 to set up a showdown against fellow Dutchman Dirk van Duyvenbode, who saw off Chris Dobe in a 13-11 thriller.
In the evening session, Dutch third seed Gian van Veen safely advanced to the second round with a 10-6 win over Poland’s Krzysztof Ratajski.
He will play fellow Dutchman Wessel Nijmann after the 14th seed saw off England’s Dave Chisnall 10-5.
Sixth seed James Wade defeated Dutchman Jermaine Watimena 10-7 to set up a showdown against fellow Englishman Ryan Searle, after 11th seed defeated Ireland’s William O’Connor 10-6.
