World Cup 2026: Top goals, assists and clean sheets highlight Premier League dominance

The Premier League total is powered by impressive scoring returns for 67 players whose quality is clear but sits below the elite level of Messi and co.

They include the likes of ArsenalKai Havertz (three for Germany), Crystal PalaceIsmaila Sar (four for Senegal), Liverpoolof Cody Gakpo (three for the Netherlands), Manchester UnitedMathieu Cunha (three for Brazil), NewcastleEr Yone Wisa (three for DR Congo), Sunderlander Brian Brobe (three for the Netherlands).

In their most recent transfers, these six players cost around £260m in total, or just under £45m on average.

A total of 17 Premier League players have scored twice or more in the tournament.

No other division has a format of clubs, whether title contenders or lower mid-table occupiers, that can spend such money on reliable international-class goal scorers.

La Liga still has some of the best players in the world and England’s Jude Bellingham, Brazil’s Vinicius Junior and Spain’s Mikel Warzabal have scored four goals each.

But beyond that there has been a big drop-off in output, with just three La Liga players – Ivory Coast’s Nicolas Pepe, Morocco’s Azedine Onhai and Switzerland’s Ruben Vargas – scoring multiple times.

Only Ken, Germany’s Deniz Undav, Switzerland’s Johann Manzambi and USA’s Malik Tillman have scored multiple times and played in the Bundesliga.

Italy’s failure to qualify for the tournament for the third consecutive edition has severely damaged Serie A’s total.
