Sharp, fearless and full of confidence, Lamin Yamal easily slipped past the defenders into the Spanish forward. There was a sense of inevitability about what was to come.
When the discovery came, it was actually his.
Flashing a low cross into goal, Yamal reached the back post and converted to score his first World Cup goal.
Atlanta Stadium erupted as fans chanted, danced and screamed Lammy’s name. This was the superstar they came to see.
Guillem Balague, speaking on 5 Live, said he saw Lamin Yamal looking around as if he had just conquered the world.
“Is it arrogance? Or confidence? It’s a mix of both,” he said. “He is chosen, he wants to be chosen.
“He is very happy with the role he is playing as the leader of the team. He told me once that he is happy when he plays football and the same reaction is seen when he plays pentagon.”
Yamal is the seventh player in history to score a World Cup goal under the age of 19. His goal against Wales in 1958 is the second player to score at 18 and under, the other being 17-year-old Pele.
Wayne Rooney has been a huge help to the teenager – comparisons to Lionel Messi are inevitable.
“The application and commitment of Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo is the reason they are both playing at this World Cup,” said the former England forward. “They did everything right. Hopefully Yamal can do that.
“What impressed me the most was when Messi came into that Barcelona team, there were some great players and he played with Ronaldinho.
“(Yamal) has entered the Barcelona and Spain team and it is his team, he is the main man.
“Everybody wants him to win.[He]was a big part of winning the Euros and he’ll be a big part of this World Cup. That’s what I’m so impressed with. He’s putting pressure on at such a young age. They hope he can do it in the next 15, 20 years.”
