Andy Robertson was expected to be named in Scotland’s World Cup squad, but admitted it was a “huge pinch moment” when he was confirmed as one of Steve Clarke’s 26-man squad.
The squad flew to the US to take part in football’s biggest tournament for the first time since 1998, being sent off by the Tartan Army at Glasgow Airport.
Scotland face Bolivia in New Jersey on Saturday in their final warm-up match before heading to their training base in North Carolina.
Robertson is set to lead Scotland in their first World Cup match against Haiti in Boston on June 14 (2pm UK time), a clash with Morocco – also at Gillette Stadium – and their final group match against Brazil in Miami.
“In the first game I was actually walking on the pitch? I still haven’t let my brain go there,” the defender said Sky Sports News.
“I don’t like to get too ahead. I think I’ll live in the moment when I know it’s the night before and I know it’s game day.
“I’ve always worked this way, I never look too far ahead.
“I was pretty confident I’d be in the squad, but it’s still a massive moment for me, it’s still a massive moment for myself that you’ve been called up to Scotland’s World Cup squad.”
Robertson, who is Scotland’s second most capped player behind Sir Kenny Dalglish, was just four when Scotland last played in the World Cup.
The 32-year-old added, “We got a small group in the group chat who are my best friends, and I actually left a message when the squad was announced.”
“I was just like ‘Who would have thought we’d all go to the World Cup together when we were all playing like little kids and chasing each other around as 11 and 12-year-olds?’ And it was a real moment of sense of achievement because going to the World Cup is not easy.
“I think we’ve proven how long it’s taken us to get there – since 1998 – but the fact that you’re one of 26 people who’s going to represent your country on the biggest stage, it’s a real proud moment.
“We’ve had some dark times, we’ve had some dark moments.
“In a Scotland jersey, the lows are the lowest you’ll have and the highs will be the highest with your country because you know you’re representing a nation and that’s the thing. But I think that’s why our squad is so close and such a good group of lads because if you look at everyone’s story, they’re all pretty similar.”
