World Cup 2026: Referee’s explanation for John McGinn’s penalty disallowance revealed

Former Scotland winger Neil McCann agrees.

“I think McGinn is a penalty and McTominay is not,” said the Kilmarnock manager.

“McGinn is one, we’ve done that as players. He’s understanding that he (El Aynaoui) is coming from the side and he knows he’s just got to take it across and communicate.

“Granted, it’s not a neat job, but there’s enough contact in his hips to get him out.”

McCann and Stephen McGinn both thought Scotland striker Che Adams should have been sent off by the Uzbek referee for a last-man challenge on defender Issa Diop.

“It’s absolutely a red card for me,” McCann said. “There’s no covering defender, it’s a clip, so it’s a ball that doesn’t seem to travel.

“It wasn’t a natural collision or an accidental pull-down. He pulled him down. Chey Adams got the goal pass.

“I can’t believe he wasn’t brought up on the (VAR) monitor.

“Someone said behind my back ‘he’s too far’, but in the Premiership we had half the boys sent off and I think we all operate under the same laws of the game.

“But it’s not too far and Che Adams is getting the ball perfectly, otherwise why show the yellow card?”

McGinn was of the same mind and added: “The way our league turned out last season, it’s an absolute stonewall red card.”
