World Cup 2026: Raul Jimenez completed his comeback in Mexico

After his time as assistant manager at Crystal Palace and West Ham, Rubio Jimenez felt he was fully deserved.

“After the head injury, it took him a while to get back to work,” Rubio said.

“There were not only medical concerns, but will he be the same killer in front of the goal? His application is amazing, he is a lovely person, his family is beautiful and very supportive, and that helped him.

“He’s a very family man, he’s a big player but he doesn’t act like one and he’s very humble and I like him.

“It was a life-threatening injury and I felt fear for him. He was doing well at the time, he was at the top of his career and it was very difficult.”

But Jimenez’s determination saw him score 68 Premier League goals in 233 appearances. He still needs to wear a reinforced headband to protect himself from further injury.

“Getting to know him, I can see why he was able to get back on the field[after the injury],” Rubio added. “He’s a fighter. I worked with him last year at Wolves. Even with himself, there were doubts that he would come back and last year was a challenging year for him at Wolves.

“But for me personally, I had no doubts, I always knew that he would come back. I have worked with many top professionals and you can see that he is resilient and has a lovely family that supports him.

“Everyone there (at Wolves) loved him, everyone wanted the club to do well and he was very emotional because the whole club had invested in him, not only because of his work, but because he is such a loving character.

“He was very invested in the club, the city and his family felt it was home, and that’s why I think they’ll be very happy to be back there.”

But Jimenez has chances to score more World Cup goals in his homeland before he returns to the West Midlands, with Mexico already in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stages.
