During their first two games, Panama adopted a dynamic approach depending on the stage of the game.

From the opponent’s goal-kick, Panama proceeded to press aggressively in a 4-4-2 formation.

If the opposition have quality possession and possession up the pitch, Panama’s high press drops into the mid-block and they switch from a 4-4-2 to a 5-3-2. Their focus is on making it difficult for teams to play through them.

As Croatia, in particular, grew into the game, Panama adopted a more defensive approach.

Their 5-3-2 became a 5-4-1, a shape they adopted for large parts of the game with a deep defensive line.
