The Liverpool footballer was once hailed as the Messiah. Now Jurgen Klopp has been asked to perform a miracle for his country.
Last month, Klopp watched as a touch TV expert as Germany crashed out of the World Cup in a shock penalty shoot-out. Defeated by Paraguay.
The defeat led to the resignation of head coach Julian Nagelsmann and plunged German football into a full-blown identity crisis.
Three weeks later, Klopp signed a four-year deal to take over as head coach, rebuilding the team and restoring the winning spirit it once famous for.
Klopp, who is set to lead the team at Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup, will make his debut against the Netherlands on September 24.
“The national team can unite us Germans like nothing else. That’s what makes this task special for me,” Klopp said.
A Champions League and Premier League winner with Liverpool and two-time Bundesliga champion with Borussia Dortmund, the 59-year-old is already regarded as one of Germany’s greatest managers.
However, while many believe he is the perfect man for the national team job, the appointment has also sparked heated debate in Germany.
Securing Klopp’s signature is a priority for the German Football Association (DFB) after Nagelsmann stepped down following the defeat to Paraguay.
“It involves passion, credibility and the ability to motivate people,” said DFB president Bernd Neuendorf.
“After the resignation of Julian Nagelsmann, he was our unequivocal choice for the position of national team coach. That is why we pursued him continuously,” added Neuendorf.
Now the deal is done.
