World Cup 2026: Humble, strong, ready – Antoine Semenyo is back where the rise began

Now he is the FA Cup final matchwinner for Manchester City and the big hope for Ghana to emulate their quarter-final finish in 2010, an instantly recognizable figure.

“Obviously he was a lad who came on loan from Bristol City and who was playing non-league not too long ago,” said Wales midfielder Josh Sheehan, a teammate of Rodney Parede when Semenyo joined in 2018.

“You don’t tend to judge too much, you just think you’ll see what he’s like in training, and wonder if an 18-year-old is going to be a bit of a bully in League Two.

“But, to be honest, he was on a different level. Strong, quick, ability, almost like a full forward – you knew he was going to kick and do something special.”

Flynn had already had a sneak peek, taking five minutes to agree the loan after seeing him in action after he trusted Bristol City loan chief Brian Tynion to help with his development.

“Our problem was that we had two good, experienced strikers,” said Flynn of Padraig Amond and Jamil Matt – the two heroes of Newport’s giant-killing FA Cup that season.

“But we just knew we had to get him, so we used a new formation with him on the left.

“We couldn’t leave him.”
