FIFA has pledged to reduce emissions by 50% by 2030 and reach net-zero by 2040.
For this year’s tournament, football’s world governing body set out a number of environmental commitments, including:
Hosting teams regionally which reduces “reliance on long-distance travel for a significant proportion of guests”.
Efforts to increase energy efficiency by promoting electric cars, public transport and water conservation
Use of existing stadiums
However, even before the first ball was kicked on June 11, there was skepticism from some climate scientists given the scale of the tournament.
A 2025 report by Scientists for Global Responsibility (SGR) estimates the overall carbon footprint of this World Cup Nine million tons of CO2e can be reached.
It said it would be almost double the average of the past four World Cups, making this year’s tournament the most polluted ever.
In 2023, A Swiss controller Dr FIFA claims it “made false statements” that Qatar 2022 will be the first carbon-neutral World Cup in history by using investments in low-carbon initiatives to offset emissions.
In response to the ruling, FIFA said it was “fully aware that climate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time and believes that it requires all of us to take immediate and sustainable climate action”.
Infantino took part in 64 matches at the last World Cup in Qatar, which used eight stadiums separated by about an hour’s drive – but this year’s tournament across the continent presents a very different challenge.
