World Cup 2026: Germany players to pay for fans to attend Ecuador game in New Jersey

Germany’s players will pay for the country’s 600 fans to travel by bus to their World Cup final group games amid criticism of high transport costs to the tournament.

Train tickets normally cost $12.90 (£9.50) from central New York to the nearby Met Life Stadium in New Jersey, where Germany will play Ecuador in their final Group E match on June 25, ramped up to $150 for the tournament before being reduced to $98.

Shuttle bus fares, initially priced at $80 to make a similar trip, have been reduced to $20. New Jersey’s governor says inflation is because FIFA refuses to subsidize transportation costs.

“In light of the high cost of bus and train travel to New York during the World Cup, German national team players have arranged free transport for 600 supporters to the final group match,” the German FA said.

“Captain Joshua Kimmich and his teammates are paying for the bus to take fans from New York to the New Jersey ground for the match against Ecuador.”

At the World Cups in Russia and Qatar, free transportation was available for fans to get to games and fan zones. The United States had committed to providing the same benefits in its 2018 host agreement.

In a change to the deal made in 2023, it was decided that supporters would be charged for travel at cost price.
