World Cup 2026: Germany defender Nico Schlotterbeck to miss rest of tournament with ankle injury


Schlotterbeck played all of Germany’s opening game at the 2026 World Cup – one 7-1 win over Curacao – scoring their second goal.

“Schlott will be sorely missed on the pitch as an outstanding defender, especially with his excellent build-up play,” Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann said.

“It could have been his World Cup. Yesterday, we all tried to lift his spirits – fortunately, he is a very positive character who is already looking forward again.

“It’s a very positive sign that he will be here in the team initially, because he has an impact off the pitch as well.”

Germany’s remaining centre-back options are Jonathan Tah, Rudiger, Waldemar Anton and Newcastle’s Malik Thiao.
