Harry Kane’s creaking voice in the post-match interview summed up the nature of England’s epic World Cup victory over Mexico in a raucous Azteca Stadium.
Kane converted the penalty as England won a thrilling last-16 tie – and when he spoke to BBC Sport after the game, he was audibly exhausted from the effort he put in celebrating after the 3-2 win.
“I’m just singing, I can’t really talk,” said the Bayern Munich striker.
“The occasion, the team, everything against us, we found a way.”
Despite taking a comfortable lead thanks to two goals from Jude Bellingham, England had to find a way.
Mexico pulled one back and Thomas Tuchel’s side then sent off Jarrell Kwansah but Kane’s penalty ultimately proved decisive as Mexico went 3-2 up with just over 20 minutes remaining.
It was a performance from England that could have given their supporters more confidence after some lackluster displays for the ages and leading up to their arrival in Mexico.
“If any team has heart and belief, it’s this team,” Tuchel told BBC Sport.
“They did it out of sheer will. No words. It’s an iconic match, an iconic stadium. We overcame a lot of odds. So proud.”
Bellingham produced one of his best performances for England, putting in plenty of effort in defense as well as his two goals.
“This is the best night of my England career. Unbelievable. I can’t put it into words right now,” said the Real Madrid midfielder.
“I dream of being part of this England squad – bringing my country together, giving them a night they will enjoy for many years to come.
“I’m very proud of this team. What we’ve done is spectacular.”
Those fans back in England had to show their own commitment, with inclement weather delaying kick-off until 02:00 BST meaning the game did not finish until after 04:00.
Bellingham’s advice for those fans?
“Take another shot and text your boss to say you’re not coming!” He joked.
