The final moment has arrived, and Spain wants our second star.
To win this World Cup, we don’t need to do anything spectacular – we just need to stay calm and play the same way.
I’m back in Madrid now after working on the tournament for the BBC and I’d say the whole country believes we can beat Argentina on Sunday and bring home the trophy like we did in 2010.
That confidence comes from many places – from winning Euro 2024, from our long 37-match unbeaten run and of course from the way we beat France in the semi-final.
The strength of this Spain team is in the group, and in their mentality. The way they play together they are a collective and they have an identity that they believe in, which means they always do the same thing.
Our first game at this World Cup was a 0-0 draw with Cape Verde, which wasn’t the result we were hoping for – but they didn’t panic, and didn’t change their approach.
It was the same against Portugal and Belgium in the knockout rounds when they had to fight until the last minute to score a winner, and the other way around, when they took an early lead against France in the semi-finals.
France were one of the big favorites to win the whole competition and scored a lot of goals in their other games but Spain were positive, and didn’t change their approach to try to hold on to their lead.
Having that clear identity and sticking to it is the most important thing, especially now.
Spain may change some personnel in the team but they always keep the same shape and their mentality is always the same – it’s to have the ball, and control the game as much as possible.
Of course sometimes a game can bring you different situations but so far this World Cup Spain haven’t trailed in any of our seven games, which is fantastic.
If that happens in the final, and we go behind against Argentina, we won’t change. We will maintain the same composure that we have seen from the beginning, until the very end.
