Women’s World Cup qualifiers: Wales ‘not good enough’ in Montenegro draw – Wilkinson

The draw meant Wales missed the chance to seize control of Group B1.

Their rivals for top spot Czech Republic also dropped points in surprising fashion as they drew 1-1 with Albania in a game that started half an hour before Wales’ match in Podgorica.

Had Wales won, they would have needed just a draw to secure first place in Tuesday’s final group game against the Czechs in Cardiff, and therefore a more favorable play-off draw for the play-offs later this year.

Instead, Wilkinson’s side must beat the Czechs – who they drew with in the opening game of the campaign – to come out on top.

“We’re right where we started (the day),” he added.

“We have to take these chances. I’m sure the Czech Republic coach is as disappointed as I am.

“I’m confident it will be a close match on Tuesday. We have to show.”

Had goal-line technology been in place at Montenegro’s Gradski Stadion, the night might have been a different story.

Wales were assured when Hughes’ second-half effort went over the line before Montenegro defender Sladjana Bulatovic cleared the ball.

“I’m disappointed there’s no VAR, but that’s the game – we can’t influence it,” Wilkinson said.

“I’ll fight for it behind the scenes, but we had to put the ball away on the night.”
