Women’s World Cup qualifiers: Wales make no excuses despite travel setback – Ryan Wilkinson

The Montenegro game is a crucial one for Wales as they battle the Czech Republic for top spot in Group B1 and therefore ensure a more favorable route into the World Cup qualifying play-offs later this year.

The Czechs, who lead on goal difference, host Albania on Friday, June 9 at the Cardiff City Stadium before facing Wales in their main group game.

Wales beat Montenegro 6-1 in Llanelli in March and are expected to claim another win in the return leg despite their far from ideal preparation.

If Wales and the Czech Republic are level on points at the end of the group stage, the winners will be determined by head-to-head record.

If they still cannot be separated, the next tie-breaker will be goal difference – but Wilkinson says that is not yet a concern.

“It’s not something we’re chasing,” he said. “What we’ve talked about is winning the group (the final two games) and then we take care of our own destiny.”
