Hughes is in the Wales squad for the second time having represented his motherland last year.
The 24-year-old, who was capped by Australia in a friendly in 2024, Made his one Wales appearance to date In December’s victory over Switzerland.
He missed the first two camps of the qualifiers with a knee injury but is now eyeing a competitive bow for Wales.
Hughes prepared to travel to Podgorica in Porthcawl, where his grandfather, aunt and two cousins live.
“I played my last game of the season with Melbourne City in South Korea and so I thought instead of going all the way back, I’d come straight here,” he explained.
“There was a heatwave as soon as I arrived, so I think I brought it with me.
“I was just hanging out at Coney Beach with my family. It was awesome.”
Born and raised in Canberra, Hughes said in his Australian accent that committing to Wales was a “no-brainer” given the opportunity by head coach Ryan Wilkinson.
“I think my mother shed a tear when I made my debut,” he added.
“I spent a lot of summers here growing up. My family would come and then my Welsh family would visit us in Australia.
“I feel very connected to Porthcawl and Wales. I feel very Welsh.”
