South Africa beat Pakistan by two wickets at Edgbaston to get their first win in the Women’s T20 World Cup.

The Proteas were Hurt at the hands of favorites Australia In their opener, they were drawn into a tough group that also included reigning 50-over world champions India.

Their win came thanks to a combination of brilliant bowling from veteran all-rounder Marijan Kapp and shambolic batting from Pakistan’s top order, who collapsed to 29-5 and then 50-8.

Kapp, 36, made an immediate impact with two wickets in the opening over, before some blistering runs between the wickets gifted South Africa three more.

But captain Fatima Sana’s inspired half-century with Tuba Hasan led Pakistan to 126-9 in a ninth-wicket partnership of 71 runs.

Fatima remained unbeaten on 55 off 38 balls with two sixes in the last over bowled by Nadine de Klerk which scored 19 runs.

The skipper then kept his side playing with the ball – finishing with figures of 3-23 – as South Africa worked hard to chase down regular wickets.

India and Australia will need to improve their batting significantly if they are to challenge for the top two in the group, but all-rounder Henri Derksen’s 52 and De Klerk’s 37 were enough for them with just three overs to spare.

The Proteas have reached the finals of the last two T20 World Cups but lost both, to Australia in 2023 and to New Zealand in 2024. Pakistan suffered two defeats after losing to India on Sunday.
