Smriti Mandhana took 68 and Deepti Sharma took 5-10 as India beat arch-rivals Pakistan by 64 runs in their T20 World Cup opener in Group One.
Opener Mandhana was dismissed twice in an innings in which he hit nine fours and two sixes to set India’s score at 170-6.
Pakistan started their reply well, reaching 52-1 at the end of the powerplay, but all-rounder Deepti Sharma took India’s first two wickets before returning to dismiss the last three batters as the ODI world champions dismissed their opponents for 106 runs.
Fatima Sana’s side lost their last seven wickets for 31 runs and were bowled out with three overs remaining, with leg-spinner Sri Charani also taking 3-21.
India captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and elected to bat, but her side slumped to 18-2 in four overs as Shafali Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues took six and one catch respectively.
Mandhana dug his side out of trouble, but fell for 27 at mid-off with India on 44-2 and his side on 55 nearing their century.
The 29-year-old put on a 91-run partnership with Harmanpreet before finally being caught by Pakistan captain Fatima Sana at long-on.
Pakistan stymied India’s efforts for several overs, but Deepti and Richa Ghosh put on 38 off the last 12 balls to set up a total that Pakistan could not challenge.
