New Zealand 162-6 (20 overs): Holliday 40 (32); Alleyne 4-27
West Indies 163-3 (19.5 overs): Campbell 90* (62); Jay Kerr 2-17
West Indies won by seven wickets
Defending champions New Zealand were beaten in their Women’s T20 World Cup opener by West Indies in a last-overs thriller in Southampton.
Chasing 163, West Indies reached their target with a ball to spare as Shamain Campbell remained unbeaten on 90.
With Sophie Devine tasked with defending six from the last over and Campbell striking 20-year-old Jahzara Claxton with one run needed, the pair sprinted to seal victory from the last ball.
Campbell was visibly emotional at the conclusion as it was his first Twenty20 fifty in 122 matches for the Windies.
New Zealand regretted several dropped catches before star all-rounder Hayley Mathews made 48 for 9.
The White Ferns’ 162-6 at the halfway stage looked a competitive total as they recovered from a mini-slump from 49-0 to 56-3.
After Easy Gaze made 39 at the top of the order, Brooke Halliday and Maddie Green chipped in with 40 and 35, while Alia Allen took 4-27 for West Indies.
It could prove a crucial win for the West Indies in a group where England are favorites to top the table but the battle for second place is wide open.
