Scotland narrowly missed out on a famous victory in the T20 World Cup as the West Indies somehow managed to win a tense game at Headingley.

They were put on the back foot by Stephanie Taylor’s 19-ball 47 not out and chased 154 with four wickets for seven when Darcy Carter suffered a calf injury and Ailsa Lister took the Scots to needing 22 from the last two games.

Deandra Dottin was in tears as she conceded 13 from the 18th over, but Windies skipper Aaliyah Alleyne held her nerve as she dismissed Carter for 59, Lister for 33 and Kirstie Gordon in the penalty shootout.

Still, Scotland refused to go quietly. He needed 13 balls from four balls and was left with two runs; Scotland were bowled out for 146 thanks to Kiana Joseph, who had earlier bowled two terrific spells to seal a seven-run victory.

Scotland were at their best for most of the first innings – athletic in the field and clever with the ball – but the veteran Taylor, making his tournament debut at the age of 35, hit three sixes in the last five balls to boost an innings that was reeling at 85-5 in the 15th over.

That was ultimately decisive.

Scotland’s hopes of progressing to their first World Cup win over Ireland on Saturday are far from over, but after being denied a big scalp, they could have a real shot at the semi-finals, where they next face England on Saturday.

West Indies return to action against Sri Lanka in Bristol on Sunday.
