Scotland 161-5 (20 overs): K Bryce 60, S Bryce 49; Canning 3-27
Ireland 121 (19.1 overs): Hunter 39; Gordon 3-16, Fraser 3-19
Scotland won by 40 runs
Scotland secured their first T20 World Cup victory with a stunning 40-run victory over Ireland in the opening match at Old Trafford.
A brilliant 106-run stand between captain Catherine Brice (60) and her sister Sarah Brice (49) helped the Scots to 161-5 in their 20 overs.
Kirsty Gordon took three wickets in an over as the Irish struggled in reply and were bowled out for 121.
Scotland tasted victory for the first time at the fifth attempt while Ireland’s woeful T20 World Cup record continued, losing 18 matches.
Ireland won the toss and elected to bowl first in a cold, windy and mainly cloudy Manchester.
It looked like a good decision as the Scots were reduced to 36-2, but the Bryce sisters changed the momentum of the match with a decisive third-wicket partnership.
Catherine’s quickfire 60 off 39 balls had six boundaries and a six and the pair put on 36 runs in just two overs.
Ireland would rue two chances to get the Scottish captain out and Alanna Dalzell misjudged the flight of the ball on the boundary before Alice Tector spilled an easy chance.
Ava Canning (3-27) picked the bowlers as Ireland chased Scotland down for 162 in the last over.
The Irish needed a strong start with the bat and reached 37-1 before losing the key wicket of captain Gabby Lewis (11) who was stumped on a Catherine Fraser delivery.
Amy Hunter top-scored with 39 and Orla Prendergast 33 but the Irish were run out by the brilliant spin bowling of Gordon (3-16) and Fraser (3-19).
Gordon’s three wickets came in the same over to leave Ireland at 70-6 and from there Scotland eased to victory, their fourth in a row against the opposition on Saturday.
Ireland return to action against hosts England in Southampton on Tuesday and the Scots next headline the West Indies on Thursday.
