Women’s T20 World Cup, Division 2, Southampton
Ireland 118-9 (20 overs) Prendergast 26 (18), the youngest 26* (15); Ecclesiastes 3-22, Dean 2-11, Gibson 2-10
England 119-6 (17.3 overs) Sciver-Brunt 48 (38); Prendergast 2-17
England won by four wickets.
Captain Nat Sciver-Brunt overshadowed England’s four-nil win over Ireland in the T20 World Cup in Southampton with a major injury scare.
Nine runs needed, Sciver-Brunt, who only returned with a calf injury, retired on 48 and headed straight for the dressing room.
England later said she had “stiffness” in her left calf – the same leg as her recent injury – and left the field as a precaution.
After Sciver-Brunt’s departure, England also lost Freya Kemp for two before heading out chasing 119 off 15 balls.
But the hosts now have two wins in their home World Cup, but now they have a big worry about their captain’s performance.
Earlier, she looked untroubled, scoring 64 with Heather Knight after Danny White Hodge, Amy Jones and Alice Capsey all fell in the space of 10 balls.
Earlier, Sophie Eccleston took three wickets and Danny Gibson and Charlie Deane each took two wickets as England dominated Ireland by an innings of 118-9.
England are four days away from their next match – a meeting with Scotland at Headingley.
Ireland, who have lost two of the two, stay on to play in Southampton. Winless New Zealand on friday.
