New Zealand are still in the mix for a semi-final spot at the T20 World Cup after a four-run win over Ireland in Southampton.

Both teams needed to win after losing their opening two games, a defeat that effectively ended Ireland’s hopes of qualifying.

A fine bowling display from Ireland restricted the wickets to 140-6 in 20 overs.

Irish skipper Gabby Lewis (58) and Orla Prendergast (59) put on a superb 110-run partnership to give Ireland a chance to win their first World Cup in the 20th Test.

Ireland fell short – a six was required from Suzy Bates off the last ball but Louise Little could only manage a single.

New Zealand suffered a heavy defeat before the match when star all-rounder Sophie Devin fell ill and was replaced by Bates.
