ICC Women’s T20 World Cup warm-up, Cardiff
England 171-6 (20 overs) Sciver-Brunt 57 (45); Patil 2-29
India 166 (19.5 overs): Bison 68 (36); Smith 3-42
England won by five runs.
Nat Sciver-Brunt scored 57 as England wrapped up their T20 World Cup campaign.
Chasing 172, India slumped to 87-5, and needed an improbable 38 in the last two overs, with Richa Ghosh needing a six from three balls as Richa Ghosh hit 21 balls from Issy Wong, six and four from Lynsey Smith.
But Smith won the battle as Ghosh hit a blistering 68 off 36 balls to lift Renuka Singh Thakur and show confidence ahead of the T20 World Cup opener against Sri Lanka on Friday.
Sciver-Brunt had a welcome turn in the middle, with a fluent 64 at the top of the order from Amy Jones and 30 off 12 balls late on as England posted a competitive 171-6 in Cardiff.
England played just three games in their 5-0 defeat against Australia and have now allayed concerns about a lack of game time ahead of the tournament.
Monday’s match for Australia was Syver-Brunt’s first international appearance this summer as she continues to manage a calf injury.
After Danny White-Hodge was dismissed for just three runs, newly introduced Jones and Syver-Brunt added 70 for the second wicket, before India regained some control in the middle overs with three quick wickets.
Jones was filled by Shafali Verma before Alice Casey and Freya Kemp fell cheaply to spin, but the form of power-hungry Gibson at the death was another tick in the game-plan box for head coach Charlotte Edwards.
On the counter-attack, Sciver-Brunt, who ensured England did not lose a goal, fell in seven balls with four fours and sixes in the final 19 overs.
The hosts rotated their bowlers again, resting seamer Lauren Bell and giving further bonuses to Tilly Courtin-Coleman, Wong and Lauren Filer, while reserve keeper Capsey replaced Jones behind the stumps.
