Women’s T20 World Cup: Australia beat Netherlands by 98 runs to continue unbeaten start to tournament | cricket news

Australia maintained their winning start to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup by beating the Netherlands by 98 runs in the Hampshire Bowl.

Six-time champions Australia finished three from three in Group A on Saturday after opening the tournament with wins over South Africa and Bangladesh.

After batting first, Australia posted 219-6 in their 20 overs and the Netherlands managed 121-3 in reply.

Beth Mooney top scored for Australia with 74 off 42 balls but had to retire due to back strain.

Her total was complemented by solid stands from Ashley Gardner (58) and Georgia Wareham (41) before Kim Garth (2-20) and Annabel Sutherland (1-23) took wickets during a failed chase for the Dutch.

Mooney earned player of the match honors and said of his forced exit: “I’m all right. Just a caution, maybe not used to all the bus travel we’re doing.

“The trip to Southampton is quite a long one, so I’m looking forward to it again tomorrow!

“As an opening batsman and a top-order batsman, your job is to score runs so, from my point of view, I did my job pretty well today.

“There were a couple of good partnerships, first with Georgia Voll and then with Ash Gardner. I thought we were very wide and the bowlers did a great job restricting them to 120.”

The Netherlands have lost all three of their group games so far, although Babette de Lied caught the eye with an unbeaten 56 in her landmark 100th T20I.

Robin Ridge also celebrated reaching the same milestone.

Australia next face Pakistan at Headingley on Tuesday evening and the Netherlands return to action against South Africa in Bristol on Thursday.
