Sri Lanka kept alive their slim hopes of reaching a maiden Women’s T20 World Cup semi-final with a three-wicket victory over Scotland at Old Trafford.

Set 152 to win after a late surge from Sarah Bryce and Ailsa Lister took Scotland to a competitive total, Sri Lanka threatened to throw off a bright start, 57-1 to 78-4 and then 118-6, before sneaking over the line with a ball to spare.

Sri Lanka, who moved up to third with their third win of the tournament, need the West Indies to beat Ireland and New Zealand to lose to England on Saturday to advance from Group 2 on net run rate.

Sri Lanka broke their chase in the opening six overs, scoring 65-2 off Chamari Athapathu, while Gabriela Fontenler took the only over for 18 and Hasini Perera and Harshitha Samarawickrama both fell to the bowling of Catherine Fraser.

Athapathu’s departure in the last over of the powerplay, Fraser bowled to score 33 (16), halted their momentum as no other batsman could match his firepower.

Skipper Catherine Bryce struck twice to remove Perera and Samarawickrama, either side of Fraser snaring Hansima Karunaratne lbw, before Kirsty Gordon accounted for Kavisha Dilhari to leave Sri Lanka needing 34 from the last five overs with four wickets in hand.

In a chaotic final, Kaushani Nuthiangana hit Rachel Slater for consecutive boundaries before picking out Lister at mid-off – while Nilakshi de Silva was dropped by Fontenlar in the last over.

With three runs needed from three balls, Slater was injured and was replaced by Priyanaz Chatterjee. Sugandika Dasnayaka cut the last ball of the innings for four runs to rescue Sri Lanka’s victory.
