Women’s Super League: How Manchester City won their first title in 10 years

Dominating from start to finish, City’s title streak was long overdue.

With no Champions League distractions, they were able to devote their full attention to the WSL after finishing fourth last season.

This really helped their cause.

Chelsea boss Sonia Bombaster says the depth of City’s squad is crucial as they rotate players and keep them fit.

This is the opinion of many, ex-Arsenal defender Jane Beattie told the Women’s Football Weekly podcast: “I’ve said for many seasons that if everyone is fit, they will win the league.

“There are many factors that contribute to why Manchester City are doing so well. They have such a talented squad.

Managing that calendar in the Champions League is difficult.

Manchester City defender Kirsten Kasparij says not being involved in European competition is “not the reason” for their success but “definitely helped” them to focus on the WSL.

Top scorer Khadija Shaw believes the same factor has created a “mindset shift”.

Being able to navigate a stable schedule was key, says former Manchester City striker Ellen White.

“If you look at last season, they finished 17 points behind Chelsea and Manchester City were fighting for the Champions League,” she said.

“Not competing in the Champions League has given them a lot of freedom, which is a big reason why they have performed so well this season.”

City reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League last season and were beaten by Chelsea in the semi-finals at Barcelona.

Of City’s current campaign, White added: “Their priority was to win WSL games. They also confirmed the depth of their squad for next season.

“That’s one reason. They’ve been able to push themselves to perform at their best every week.”
