Women’s Super League: Birmingham have signed goalkeeper Katie Startup on a free transfer

Birmingham City have signed goalkeeper Katie Startup after leaving Manchester City when his contract expired.

The 27-year-old was part of the City squad that won their first Women’s Super League title in a decade and the Women’s FA Cup in 2025-26.

The startup did not make an appearance at the club after joining from Brighton in 2024, but became a fan favorite thanks to his professionalism and support of the goalkeeping group in training.

He joins newly promoted Birmingham City on what is believed to be a two-year deal, as they hope to secure their place in the WSL next season.

“Coming from WSL 2 on the back of an impressive season and being part of a new era for the club is really exciting,” said Startup.

“I worked with (manager) Amy Merricks and (director) Hope Powell at Brighton four years ago and I know they share the same values ​​that I do.

“I’m really excited to work with them again and it was a really big decision factor for me.”

After graduating from Chelsea’s academy, the startup joined Charlton Athletic in 2017 before moving to top-flight Brighton three years later.

He had loan spells with Charlton Athletic, Liverpool and Manchester City, eventually joining the champions permanently in 2024.

The startup also started last season on loan at Everton before City called up their title race in November.

“Having worked with Katie in the past, I know what qualities she will bring to this football club,” added Birmingham boss Merrix.

“He is a dedicated professional, a brilliant teammate and someone who always wants to improve.

“He runs the standard every day and brings experience from a number of environments across the WSL, which will be invaluable to this group.”
