Selected Others: -4 E Henseleit (Ger); -1 Carolina Melgrati (Eta), E M Stark (Swe), P Delacour (Fra); +1 L Maguire (Ayr) G Dryberg (SCO)
South Korea’s Ina Yoon let a five-shot lead slip as compatriot Hyeran Ryu moved two shots away to advance to the final round of the Women’s PGA Championship.
Yoon, who was nine under par after a spectacular opening round, moved to 12 under at the halfway point with a 69.
At the end of the second round, however, world number one Nellie Korda predicted Yun, who had yet to win a major, Start feeling the pressure.
And it was a grueling third round of 75, which included six bogeys, to leave the 23-year-old leader two shots behind Ryu.
“I was just so nervous,” Yoon said. “I missed the short putt.
“After 10, I think I found my pace. Even on the front nine, I didn’t do anything different, but I think I was a little bit unlucky so there was a little bit of frustration there.”
Ryu, 25, backed up his impressive second-round 64 to reach 11 under with a third-round 68.
He said: “My front nine, it was amazing because I got an eagle and three birdies. I started the back nine, it was more windy and a lot of hard putts.
“But I just made a bogey, so that was good for me.”
Korda is eyeing a third major title this year after winning the Chevron Championship and the US Open.
The American shot one under in the third round – three birdies and two bogeys – to finish four off the lead.
Two-time major winner Brooke Henderson is at 10 under and in strong position to challenge Sunday for her second Women’s PGA Championship.
The 28-year-old, who won the tournament in 2016, kept Ryu within reach in the three-under round, but admitted the wind had an effect.
“It’s affecting everything,” Henderson said. “I think it was hard to judge all day.”
Korda also added that the weather will dictate how he reaches the final round.
“There’s only a few putts left,” he said. “Generally speaking, when it’s windy like this, you have to factor in the wind, and a gust here and there. Sometimes you’re not confident with your line.”
The $13m (£9.8m) purse this week is the largest in women’s golf history, with $1.95m (£1.48m) awarded to the winner.
