Women’s Giro d’Italia 2026: Demi Vollering snatches victory in final stage to complete Grand Tour trilogy

Antonia Niedermayer became the virtual leader, attacking with 80 kilometers to go, with Elisa Longo Borghini and Niamh Fisher-Black joining her to form a breakaway group.

But Vollering then dropped van der Breggen with 39 km to go on the Coletta di Brondello, the final climb of the race, and moved into the lead group 28 km from the finish.

The FDJ-Suez rider had already secured the Maglia Rossa (pink jersey) without challenging for the sprint finish stage win, so Longo Borghini, winner of the last two Giro’s, edged New Zealand’s Fisher-Black to take the Italian’s first stage win of this year’s race.

Volring is 30 seconds ahead of Niedermayer in the overall standings, with Van der Breggen a further minute behind, to add to his 2024 and 2025 La Vuelta Feminina victories at the Giro and his 2023 Tour de France victory.

“I gave it my all during the final climb – it was the testing time of my life,” Vollering said.

“I had to be prepared to take risks, even if it meant losing everything. I did it, we did it. I can hardly believe it.”
