Women with PMOS should have an NHS check-up every year, says the NHS

The guidelines advise when to suspect PMOS, how to evaluate women and how to diagnose the condition.

They also say that PMOS should not be discounted in postmenopausal women.

PMOS is thought to be more common in black, Asian and mixed-race women, and healthcare professionals “should take this into account when assessing symptoms”, says NICE.

Living with PMOS can also have a significant impact on mental health and quality of life, and the draft guidance says depression and anxiety are common.

For those planning to conceive, advice on weight, diet, nutrition, exercise, sleep and mental health is recommended.

Mary Ann Ledingham, adviser on women’s and reproductive health at NICE, said recommending a “simpler” annual review was a “useful step”.

“This new guideline will improve consistency of care, increase awareness of the condition, and support early diagnosis and management.”

The draft guidance is open for consultation from 1 July to 11 August 2026, and NICE is inviting feedback from healthcare professionals, patients and the public. NICE expects to publish its final guidance on PMOS in December 2026.
