Real Madrid’s left back Alvaro Carreras caused controversy in the 34th round of the Spanish league today, Sunday, in the match against Espanyol by sitting on the bench of his team.
Real Madrid equalized against Espanyol with an unanswered brace from Vinicius Junior to delay Barcelona’s La Liga title.
Real Madrid lifted their tally to 77 points in second place, 11 adrift of leaders Barcelona, ahead of next Sunday night’s El Clasico clash between the two teams in round 35 of the competition.
Real Madrid head coach Alvaro Arbeloa did not start Carreras in the match against Espanyol and preferred to include his colleague Ferland Mendy in the starting line-up.
But after just 14 minutes, Mendy was injured and the medical staff asked to replace him, so Arbeloa decided to play Fran Garcia instead.
As Fran García prepared to come on as a substitute and receive instructions, the cameras showed Carreras on the bench laughing wryly.
“Mundo Deportivo” newspaper noted that Carreras’ reaction upset the “Real” fans, because what he did was considered a mockery of the coach’s decision.
This wry laugh could influence Arbeloa’s decision in El Clasico as he could opt to field Fran Garcia in the starting line-up against Barcelona at the Camp Nou.
