Serena Williams came agonizingly close to a stunning comeback win at Wimbledon before narrowly losing three sets to Maya Joint.

Four years ago, after the American great lost in the first round to France’s Harmony Tan, many were waving what would be a final farewell to Center Court.

But on Tuesday, the 44-year-old received an electric reception when she returned to the pristine grass courts where she has won seven singles and six women’s doubles titles.

And, 1,462 days after her last match at the All England Club, Williams showed her never-give-up mentality to save a match point and force a decision against the 24-year-old teenager.

Despite the crowd’s best efforts, Williams won the Australian Open 6-3 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 to open her latest tennis career with victory.
