Wimbledon 2026 results: Iga Svitek continues title defense with dominant win over Karolina Pliskova

Suitek will dominate a potentially tricky second-round match-up against the former world number one, although 34-year-old Pliskova is on the comeback trail after missing most of the 2025 season recovering from ankle surgery.

In set two Pliskova managed a response, breaking for a 2-0 lead as Swatek leveled again on serve – but the Czech could not muster a double-faulting break point in the next game.

Another costly double fault two games later gave Suitek another break, who by then had recovered to level his first set and won six of the last seven games to complete the victory in just 69 minutes.

After 18-time major winner Martina Navratilova graded her performance A+, Swiatek responded: “When such legends say something nice about you, it means a lot. That’s basically why you try to be the best tennis player, so that people appreciate it.

“I don’t know if it was an A+ because at times it was a tricky game. I felt like I played a lot of dirty shots in the final game, especially, I didn’t control them that much. So maybe not an A+, more like a B, I’d say.”

The victory extended Suetek’s record of not losing past the third round at a Grand Slam since the 2019 US Open, and she is the only woman to reach the third round in the 26 Grand Slam events held this decade.

However, she lost at that stage of this year’s French Open – a tournament in which she had won four titles in the previous six years – and will now look to avoid the same fate against Alexandra Ila of the Philippines.
