Wimbledon 2026 results: Iga Svitek beats Taylor Townsend in start of title defense

Suitek has not won a Grand Slam since Wimbledon and is yet to win a title this year.

He lost in the third round of the French Open – a major he has won four times – and suffered a three-set defeat in his only grass-court match in the build-up to Wimbledon.

Suatek picked up where she left off on center court, quickly dropping just one game in the first set and hitting 10 winners along the way.

However, her serve failed miserably in the second set – Townsend helped her by standing inside the baseline to rush her – and she double-faulted into a double break down.

Townsend has not won a singles match at Wimbledon since 2019 but she and Katerina Siniakova won the women’s doubles title together two years ago and her excellent touch and slice helped her level the match.

Suitek went on court after the second set where she was hit with 16 unforced errors, but it took time to find her rhythm on her return.

The 12-minute first game of the set was crucial, with Suatek saving four break points and overcoming three double faults to hold serve.

Townsend – watched by Siniakova and good friend Naomi Osaka – kept in touch but Swiatek went 5-2 up with a passing forehand before winning.

“You could see the relief on Iga’s face. It was a very intense match,” former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli told BBC 5 Live.

“The turning point was in the first game of the third set. It was absolutely crucial because he really lost momentum in this match.

Swiatek will face Czech runner-up Karolina Pliskova at Wimbledon in 2021 in the second round.

American Anisimova advanced by beating Macedonian qualifier Lina Zorcheska 6-3 6-2, while 2024 finalist Jasmine Paolini saw off Robin Montgomery 0-6 6-4 7-5.
