Barbora Krejcikova dedicated her thrilling three-set Wimbledon win over French Open champion Mirra Andreeva to her tennis-loving niece, who was stuck at home with chickenpox.
The Czech, who won the women’s singles title at Wimbledon in 2024, defeated the fifth seed 4-6 7-5 6-4 after nearly three grueling hours on court.
Krejcikova came close to letting victory slip away as she missed six match points in the deciding set at 5-3 up, but as Andreeva’s emotions got the better of her, she regained her composure to win a game later.
Krejcikova later said she hoped her performance on Center Court – which she called “the best court in the world” – had made her young niece proud.
“I believe my little niece was watching, and my nephew. He also plays tennis and he loves it so hopefully he was watching,” the 30-year-old said.
“He’s actually sick, I think he has chickenpox. My nephew got it from kindergarten, so I hope my brother will let him and my nephew watch this match.
“I hope he will be proud of me and hopefully I can give him some inspiration for tennis and life.”
At one point, both players became distracted as loud cheers rang out around center court England defeated DR Congo To reach the last sixteen of the World Cup.
Krejcikova has been plagued by injuries and has slipped down the rankings since her triumph at the All England Club two years ago, while she suffered first-round exits at the Australian Open and Roland Garros earlier this season.
“It’s definitely special. I’ve been through a lot of injuries in the last few months and I’ve had a lot of trouble in my personal life,” added the world number 38.
“It was really hard to go through all the emotions of what happened.”
