Arthur Ferry kept Britain’s hopes alive at Wimbledon when he beat Finland’s Otto Virtanen to reach the third round, but Katie Swan’s dream come true back in SW19 at Madison Keys.
After the opening round, only four players were left standing in the All England Club. 15 Britons fell at the first hurdle – The highest number since 1988.
Ferry became the first Englishman to reach the second round after coming from a set to beat Bosnia’s Damir Zumhur on Tuesday.
And the 23-year-old Waldkart continued to battle to win 18 on court in a similar manner against Virtanen, which ended in a 5-7 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 6-3 victory.
But Swann, making her first appearance at Wimbledon in three years, failed to join Ferrin in the third round as she fell to a 6-1 6-4 defeat to American Keys.
The 27-year-old had a “full-circle moment” as she stormed past Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begun to win her first Grand Slam major since beating the same opponent in 2018.
It was the first time Fairy had reached the third round of a Grand Slam, partly attended by the Princess of Wales.
British teammates Jacob Fearnley and Jan Choinski hope to follow him later on Thursday when they take on Jumeirah Munnar and Frances Tiafon.
Ferry, who is ranked 114th in the world, will next face another unseeded player in Belgium’s Zizou Bergs or Portugal’s Jaime Faria.
