Recent history suggests that Jannik Sinner should be all but certain to retain his Wimbledon title – but that’s a different proposition for Alexander Zverev.
The world number one is aiming to become the 10th man in the Open era to retain the All England Club men’s singles title. Carlos Alcaraz hit To lift the trophy for the first time last summer.
The 24-year-old Italian has won the last 9 meetings and the last 6 games against Zverev.
But Sinner is wary of the threat posed by Zverev after the German Ended the long wait Last month at the French Open for her maiden Grand Slam success.
“Whatever happened between me and him, it happened. In between, he won the Grand Slam in Paris, which gave him a lot of confidence,” Sinner said.
“He’s a tough player to play against. He was before but more so now. He’s very relaxed on the court at the moment.
“I will try to do my best but it will be very, very difficult – it is very different from the other matches we have played.”
For a long time, it appeared that Zverev was about to end his career as the best men’s player to never win a major title.
But the 29-year-old ensured he would shrug off that tag with a win over Italy’s Flavio Cobolli in the Roland Garros final – his 41st time at a major.
“I will stay focused. I will stay hungry, I want more. I want to play at a better level and I want to keep winning. I have another big chance on Sunday,” Zverev said.
“If you win a major, you know how to do it and you feel like you can do it again.
“You have this feeling inside you.”
