Wimbledon 2026: Jamie Murray answers your tennis questions

Q: What is the maximum size of a tennis racket? James in Dorset and David in Llannog

Jamie: Most standard tennis rackets are 27 inches in length. Some players play with longer ones, so a quarter or a half inch longer. The maximum you are allowed is 29 inches, but I don’t know anyone who gets close to that!

Q: Does heat affect the tennis ball? Richard at Parley

Jamie: I think it is, yes. It makes them travel faster through the air and they will probably survive the bounce, because the surface will be reactive. This certainly helps them fly faster through the air when it’s hot.

Q: What do players look for when testing each survey tennis ball? Margaret in Kent and Anne in South Yorkshire

Jamie: All players will need three or four balls to choose from before serving. The reason they do this is because they are trying to find the new, smoother ball, because it will fly faster through the air, which will help them serve and try to get more free points.

Q: What do the pros do with last year’s tennis bags and are their tennis shoes custom-made? If so, do they get more width around the toes? Gordon of Newcastle

Jamie: I think most players take their bags home after a Grand Slam and either give them away or they pile up. With shoes, I don’t think players custom make them, I think footwear brands just make standard shoes and hope players like them.

Question: Jamie Murray used to wear sunglasses during doubles matches. Are all players allowed to wear them? Hillary at Leighton Buzzard

Q: Why don’t professional tennis players wear sunglasses? Jane in Wedmore, Rona in Helensburgh, Alec in Leeds and Jill in Hampshire.

Jamie: I don’t know why professional tennis players don’t wear them. I’ve worn them for 13 years of my career, to protect my eyes and to help with all the lighting in the sunny conditions we play in, especially across Australia and the US. The quality of the company’s lenses is so good these days – I don’t understand why more players don’t use them!

Q: Do the players use sunscreen, because I don’t see them wearing it? Richard in Plymouth and Jane in Northampton

Jamie: All players wear sunscreen, but will apply it in the locker room before going out. They will never enforce it when they go to court. Firstly, because they will sweat immediately and secondly because it will make their hands really slippery. Most players then wear a cap so they don’t have to put sunscreen on their forehead, which would be a problem if it gets in their eyes.
