Wimbledon 2026: How Gauff, Ketuk, Muchova and Noskova found their feet on grass

Kostyuk was one of the leading players in clay-court swing, winning two consecutive titles before reaching the French Open semifinals.

The 24-year-old did not play a tournament before Wimbledon, instead returning home to Ukraine and spending a holiday in Greece.

She expressed her hope of transitioning from clay to grass, entering this year’s championship without a win on the surface for two years.

“I feel like the most years I’ve played here, I’ve played a lot of awesome stuff,” Kostyuk said.

“I couldn’t find my tennis on this floor in any tournament. It was a very complicated relationship for me.”

When she arrived in London three weeks ago, Kostyuk was still in disbelief.

44-year-old Serena Williams and Jessica Pegula’s lack of practice hasn’t dented her confidence; But coach Sandra Zaniewska spoke.

“I turned to Sandra and said: ‘If you think grass suits my game, to be honest, tell me now?’ She said: ‘100%’, Kostyuk said.

“That gave me something to hold on to.”
