Wimbledon 2026: Arthur Ferry stuns Flavio Cobolli to set up semi-final against Alexander Zverev | tennis news

Britain’s Arthur Ferry stunned Flavio Cobolli in straight sets to continue his remarkable wild-card run and reach the Wimbledon semi-finals.

Ferry fired up a ecstatic Center Court crowd and produced another outstanding performance in tense conditions to win 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 6-0 to become only the fifth British player to reach the men’s singles last four in the Open era, after Andy Murray, Tim Henman, Cameron Norrie and Roger Taylor.

The 23-year-old next faces Germany’s Alexander Zverev, who defeated Taylor Fritz of the United States 6-4 6-4 6-2, with Janic Ciner taking on Novak Djokovic in the other semi-final on Friday.

“It just seems to get better and better every match. I can’t believe it. It’s unbelievable to play on Center Court for the second time, the second win,” said Ferri, who reached this stage of Wimbledon with the second wild-card since Goran Ivanisevic in 2001.

“I played with Flavio earlier this year and beat him in Australia so I knew I could do it. It gave me a boost of confidence. Just kept going, very nervous beforehand but kept going until the finish line.

“I felt an emotion in that last match that I’ve never felt before in my life. It’s incredible to share with those guys (as he watches in his corner). It makes me so happy.”

How the Ferry Moved Cobly

Ferry showed no signs of nerves or feeling the effects of two five-set matches as she pushed Cobolli back in baseline rallies and served comfortably throughout the first set.

Cobolli had his first break-point opportunity in the seventh game but was unable to take it and instead Ferri broke the Italian in the 10th game to take the first set.

Cobley came out of the blocks flying early in the second set to break the tie but the Briton came back to make it 2-2 as he rediscovered his rhythm.

Neither player was able to create more break-point opportunities so a crucial tie-break was required – and Ferry came out on top with some aggressive shot-making and an early mini-break proving decisive.

Cobolli looked physically and mentally stunned, with Ferri taking full advantage by breaking his opponent early in the third set and then saving crucial break points in the second game.

He consolidated it with a double break, Cobly showed his frustration with the home support and played with increasing freedom en route to a set bagel and an incredible win.

Alison Taylor, Arthur Ferry’s former coach, has revealed what it was like to coach the 23-year-old in his younger days and what stood out to him at first.

“I’ve never been in this position before. I’ve been doing a great job for the last 10 days, so I’ll see where it takes me,” concluded Ferry.

Earlier on Wednesday, Czech Republic’s Linda Noskova reached her first Grand Slam semi-final by beating Belgium’s Elise Mertens 6-3 7-5.

After defeating Italy’s Jasmine Paolini 6-3, 6-2, Noskova will now face Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk.

Two women’s semifinals will be played on Thursday, with Coco Gough taking on Karolina Muchova.
