The World Cup confused the accounts of the Spanish league… 5 matches are threatened with postponement
The opening round of the 2026-27 Spanish league season is threatened with sweeping changes after the 2026 World Cup forced its way into the fixture schedule, with a large number of La Liga club players continuing with their teams in the crucial rounds of the tournament.
Spanish league president Javier Tebas had previously explained that any match involving at least one player who reached the World Cup semi-finals with his country would be a candidate for postponement to allow the players to receive the rest and preparation periods stipulated in the collective agreement.
The newspaper reported.Brand:Today, Saturday, the Spanish newspaper wrote that after the teams of Spain and France officially qualified for the semi-finals, 4 matches from the first round became definite candidates for postponement due to the presence of a large number of national team players in the ranks of the clubs.
The postponed meetings are:
Barcelona x Athletic Bilbao.
“Real Madrid” x “Real Sociedad”.
Atletico Madrid x Malaga.
“Celta Vigo” x “Osasuna”.
There is still a possibility of postponing the fifth match depending on the result of the match between Argentina and Switzerland in the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
If Switzerland qualify for the semi-finals, the match between “Seville” and “Rayo Vallecano” will have to be postponed due to the presence of Swiss Gabriel Sou and Ruben Vargas in the ranks of the Andalusian club.
However, if Argentina retain the transit ticket, the match between Valencia and Real Betis could be postponed due to the presence of Giovanni Lo Celso in the ranks of Betis.
On the other hand, the result of the England-Norway match will not affect the number of postponed matches, as the players involved in those matches, such as Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Alexandre Sorlot (Atletico Madrid) and Anthony Gordon (Barcelona), belong to clubs whose matches will already be postponed due to the presence of other players from France and Spain.
Javier Tebas has confirmed that La Liga has developed a plan to ensure the rights of all players participating in the World Cup are respected.
The president of the association said in previous statements. “All players will get 3 weeks off after the last World Cup game and then another 3 weeks to prepare for the new season as per the collective agreement.”
He added: “We’ve done the research and it’s easy to split the first round so that there are 6 matches on time on August 14, 15 and 16 and 3 or 4 other matches in the middle of the week so that everyone gets a full 21 days off.
