Chelsea’s moves in the summer transfer market are not limited to strengthening their ranks with players, but also extend to strengthening the technical staff as part of manager Xabi Alonso’s efforts to work out all the technical details ahead of the start of the new season.
According to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC:Chelsea are in talks with Aston Villa to sign Scottish dead-ball coach Austin McVie, who has a strong reputation in the area, amid competition from several English Premier League clubs, in addition to interest from clubs in the Saudi Professional League.
The report stated that Aston Villa would receive financial compensation if McVeigh were to leave, as his contract includes a penalty clause that allows him to leave.
For the past five years, the 46-year-old Scottish coach has combined his work with Aston Villa and the Portugal national team, where he held the same position under coach Roberto Martinez, who stepped down after the 2026 World Cup.

Aston Villa enjoyed remarkable success under McPhee’s watch, topping Europe’s top five clubs in goals scored from betting in the 2023-2024 season, before continuing their brilliance the following season to finish joint-top of the Premier League with Arsenal.
McPhee is expected to be among the coaching staff to leave Aston Villa this summer after they helped lead the side to the Europa League title and Champions League qualification under Unai Emery.
Chelsea’s interest in McPhee comes amid a restructuring of their technical staff, with current dead-ball coach Bernardo Cueva, who joined from Brentford for £750,000 in 2024, moving into a technical role behind the scenes, paving the way for a new manager to be hired.
