Will Justin Rose’s McLaren change club?

Rose plays with McLaren irons and is likely to use the more forgiving game-improvement versions with the longer end of the bag and the rest of the blade.

This is not as dangerous as changing his entire setup. The driver, putter, and ball are usually the most critical components, so the move isn’t as difficult as it sounds.

Still, he’s teaming up with a company that’s completely new to the golf industry, and while the regionals data is encouraging, the acid test is only on the course.

Rose is making this change in the heart of the golf season, when the majors are thick and fast. The only races that would drastically change and improve his already great work were done and dusted after three months.

That’s where the danger comes in. Any setbacks can lead to a wasted season in the blink of an eye. And at the age of 45.

“The clubs have a great feel,” Rose said. “A lot of my own preferences go into the metals I play.”

But new clubs have unpredictable results and under competitive pressure this can be frustrating.

Rose said he knows the potential pitfalls.

There will be a screening process.

“You can try all you want. You’ve got to put the clubs in play, and there’s going to be little situations there — different lies, all kinds of things.

“But I don’t see any problems in the long run.”
