Division and fighting, longing for peace. Three years of war in Sudan has created the worst humanitarian crisis in recent memory.

The UN says 14 million people have fled their homes. Almost half of Sudan is facing severe famine. And more than 18 million people need urgent medical help for injuries and illnesses.

Aid groups have also accused the warring parties – the army and the Rapid Support Forces – of using sexual violence as a weapon of war.

But hope for a ceasefire in Sudan appears to have faded.

Why have the military and the RSF failed to come to the table? Is the involvement of foreign players undermining the role of mediation?
